I’ll Have Another and the French have something in common. They are both retiring early. This is where the similarities stop.

The racing horse is retiring early due to his injuries. Nobody wants him to, he probably doesn’t want to, but he has to for his safety and his jockey’s safety. He’s retiring a true champion, after hard work and austere training policies.

The French, on the other hand, are retiring early because the new socialist President thinks it’s a good idea. He’s reversed former French President Nicholas Sarkozy’s key austerity reform, He’s lowering the retirement age back down to 60 from 62, a move that’s getting a big bravo from France’s unions.

This just doesn’t seen right to me. Why would you lower the retirement age when 1) the rest of the world is raising theirs, 2) your country has the longest life expectancy in the world, and 3) your economy is saddled with some major financial problems. 

Here’s a safe bet: unfortunately we won’t be able to see I’ll Have Another on the race track anymore, and odds are we won’t see France on the right track anytime soon.
