Family Ties
Dads could be in for a big payday this Father’s Day.
A survey by the National Retail Federation says the average person will spend about $117 on Father’s Day, that’s up about 10% from last year. Total spending will be about $12.7 billion on everything from outings to dinners, clothes, sporting equipment, and electronics.
Dads deserve it. And in case you want to find out just how much your dad deserves, you can tally up his ‘worth’ by looking at the 2012 Father’s Day Index. (I know he’s priceless).
Around my house, my dad answers to a lot of names. There’s Dad, Pops, Joe (since we could talk, my brother and I sometimes call him by his first name), and there’s even Mr. Fix-It Mr. Break-it (he’s not so handy with a hammer). But whatever I call him he knows he’s number one in my book, or should I say our book, Your Teacher Said What?!, By Joe Kernen & Blake Kernen.
My dad means everything to me and I know I mean so much to him also. He’s adopted, so when I was born you can imagine the thrill of not only having a baby, but also seeing the only person you knew in the entire world who resembled you. (Since then, my mom found my dad’s birth family on Facebook, but that’s another story for another day.)
On Father’s Day, it’s really not about neckties but about family ties. I’m going to give my father a huge hug and a big thank you for being my dad, Joe Kernen.
